Story
Las Morenitas is one of four farms owned by producer Victor Robelo as part of the Las Nubes group, stretching across Jinotega and Matagalpa in Nicaragua. Sitting at around 1,000 to 1,250 metres above sea level, the farm is Rainforest Alliance certified and reflects Victor’s focus on producing high quality coffee while investing in the people behind each harvest.
That approach can be seen throughout the farm. Workers are paid more than double the local minimum wage, helping skilled pickers return year after year, while Victor also continually invests in worker accommodation, washing facilities, communal spaces and a school which is used for both children and evening classes. During harvest, each microlot is given its own team of trained pickers, with a strong emphasis on careful selection and consistency.
For this naturally processed lot, ripe cherries are fermented overnight before being taken to Beneficio Las Nubes in Matagalpa, where the drier climate is better suited to sun drying. The coffee is slowly dried on raised beds for around 40 days, with shade netting and regular raking used to carefully control the process.
The result is a rich and fruit-forward coffee with notes of Cherry, Chocolate, Mango, Raspberry and Vanilla, combining plenty of sweetness with the depth and character we look for in our Gold Label range.
